Not Moving to the Suburbs
My professor tells his lecture hall,
“Sometimes death is easier than
breaking up.”
When your lover is dead
you don’t wonder
what they are doing now
or if they’ve moved on.
You can’t be jealous of the dead.
Something tells me
my professor’s never lost
a loved one to internal bleeding,
arm filling with fluid,
158 units of blood
being pumped through
a body with both stomach and intestines
exposed to the salty, humid air
that chokes the family
and friends.
I’d rather my loved one was happy,
living in the suburb,
quietly watching his children grow,
falling in and out of love.
Maybe then I wouldn’t think about
how he gets to sleep this all away
while I’m stuck here
being jealous of the dead.
